Position:                  Construction Equipment Field Service Technician

Department:            Service  

Location:                 Southwestern PA Region

Reports to:              Service Supervisor in Butler, PA

Status:                     Full-Time/Non-Exempt

General Purpose:

Diagnose, repair and overhaul mechanical and pneumatic equipment such as backhoes, graders, wheel loaders, skid steers, milling machines and pavers used in the construction industry.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • On site repair and replace damaged or worn parts
  • Operate and inspect equipment in order to diagnose defects
  • Test equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers’ specifications
  • Diagnose faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs, using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices
  • Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools
  • Clean, lubricate, and perform other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles
  • Comply with all safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges
  • Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings
  • Overhaul and test equipment to ensure operating efficiency
  • Assemble gear systems, and align frames and gears
  • Fit bearings to adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment
  • Weld or solder broken parts and structural members, using electric or gas welders and soldering tools
  • Clean parts by spraying them with grease solvent or immersing them in tanks of solvent
  • Adjust, maintain, and repair or replace subassemblies, such as transmissions and crawler heads, using hand tools, jacks, and cranes
  • Effectively communicate and actively participate within a goal-orientated team environment
  • Actively participate in problem solving and continuous improvement activities
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Perform other duties as assigned

General Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • DOT Certified
  • High degree of attention to detail required
  • Show strong reasoning and creative problem-solving skills to overcome mechanical challenges
  • Have a customer service mentality and a strong desire to meet daily goals so the organization can meet and exceed customer expectations
  • Ability to read and comprehend work instructions and standard procedures
  • Ability to perform basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on a frequent basis
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures, depending upon the season
  • Possess a collaborative, team-driven attitude. Team members rely on each other to complete required tasks in order to meet daily and weekly schedules, and as a result a good attendance record and a team focus is critical
  • Be quality and precision-driven, and able to follow all quality and safety requirements
  • Previous experience in a heavy equipment technician field is a plus
